Early 20th Century Indian Carved Wood Nandi Figure
Stunning south Indian Nandi figure, this piece has a fantastic patina to the original paint and oozes character and charm. The humped bull Nandi ('rejoicing') symbolizes strength, virility and fertility as well as religious and moral duties. His crouching image, often housed in a small pavilion, is at the entrance of every Shiva temple. In the southern tradition he is usually shown seated with his legs tucked beneath him. Also, the body - as here - is often foreshortened in comparison with the head and front parts. Nandi, also known as Nandikeshvara or Nandideva, is the bull vahana of the Hindu god Shiva and the first of the Navadurga, Shailaputri. He is also the guardian deity of Kailash, the abode of Shiva. Almost all Shiva temples display stone images of a seated Nandi, generally facing the main shrine.
